The Maharashtra Government has recently decided to make installation of CCTVs mandatory for all private buildings in Mumbai like the official buildings, for which the government has undertaken necessary actions. Anil Deshmukh, the home minister of Maharashtra picked up this topic in the state assembly recently and informed that the government has decided to make CCTVs mandatory for all private buildings in Mumbai for security reasons. He also informed that in order to legally establish it, the government will make changes to the building proposal rules. According to the home minister, the CCTVs will help in monitoring and bringing down the crime rates in the country’s largest city. The government has already installed 5,000 CCTVs in Mumbai and plans to add 5,600 more cameras in the next few months. Deshmukh said, “The government is looking to make changes to the building proposal rules to make installation of cameras within the premises of the existing and new buildings in the city. The cameras will be linked with the surveillance network of the police and help in reducing the crime rate, especially crimes against women”. Maharashtra in the recent past has seen an increase in the crime rates especially related to drug peddling. In 2019, 14,029 FIRs were lodged against drug peddlers and 14,805 people were arrested. The government confiscated 13,522kg of drugs worth RS 281 crores.
